Battlefield 6 classes
Four roles, signature weapons, and the gadgets that actually win flags.
Battlefield 6 brought classes back after Battlefield 2042’s specialists. You still customize weapons, but the gadget tray, signature trait, and training path decide whether you are a medic, a tank killer, a door kicker, or a scout. This page is the role manual. Pair it with the class tier list when you want a ranked take for the current map pool, and with loadouts when you want attachments.
You can swap class between deaths. You cannot usefully play Recon gadgets on an Assault kit. Learn one class well, then keep a second for maps that punish the first — Engineer on Tsuru Reef, Support on Empire State, Assault on Saints Quarter.
Assault — charge and control
Assault is the frontline infantry class. Signature weapons are assault rifles, with faster draw and sprint-to-fire. The signature gadget set is built to break holds: grenade launchers, flashbangs, an assault ladder for unexpected elevation, and the adrenaline injector that spikes sprint speed, cuts explosive damage, and helps you hear footsteps when a fight goes wrong.
Training paths split Assault into a grenade-heavy breacher or a mobility shooter. The second path unlocks through class assignments after rank 20 — challenges such as kills while adrenaline is active and squad spawns on your beacon. If you main Assault, finish those assignments instead of hopping to Engineer every time a tank appears. Your job is to take the building. Let Engineer deal with the hull in the street.
Assault is strongest on infantry maps and in Breakthrough first sectors. It is average on open armor maps unless you run a ladder flank or a second primary for range. See maps for which layouts reward that aggression.
Engineer — wreck and repair
Engineer exists because vehicles exist. Signature weapons are SMGs with improved hip-fire, which is a hint: you are not supposed to lose a CQB fight while you wait for a tank to peak. Gadgets include repair tools, mines, and launchers that delete armor and, thanks to destruction, the cover armor hides behind.
If nobody on your team is Engineer on Operation Firestorm, Railway to Golmud, or Tsuru Reef, you will lose the vehicle game and then the flags. Repair friendly armor from a covered angle. Do not stand in the open torching a tank that is already being farmed by a helicopter. The vehicle guide explains seats and lock-ons so you stop dumping rockets into reactive armor from the front.
On infantry-only maps, Engineer is a gadget class with an SMG. You can still collapse buildings with rockets, but Support and Assault will out-value you if there are no vehicles to farm.
Support — protect and supply
Support is the backbone class in Season 4 for a simple reason: it merged medic and ammo into one kit. The supply bag restocks you and nearby teammates. The defibrillator is a fast revive that saves tickets. Deployable cover creates a revive stall. LMGs do not slow your sprint, so you can actually rotate instead of waddling.
A good Support player is not a turret in the back of the map. You live one room behind the fight, dump the bag, revive the Assault who just cracked the door, and smoke the lane the Recon is holding. Smoke grenades are the default throwable for this class on almost every mode.
If your squad is dying on the same staircase, you are the fix. If you want a selfish loadout anyway, Support still has the best sustained fire for holding a captured point. Check the weapon tier list for KTS100 MK8, RPK-74M, and other LMGs that currently win those holds.
Recon — intel and picks
Recon’s signature weapons are sniper rifles. The useful Recon is not the one with 12 kills and 200 meters of unused grass. Gadgets include a recon drone, motion tools, C-4, spawn beacons, and spotting that actually feeds the minimap. The UAV-style tools ask you to play closer than a traditional hill camper, which is why the class feels weak in uncoordinated pubs and excellent in a squad that talks.
Plant the beacon on the back of a contested flag, not in a tower the enemy already cleared. Use C-4 on armor that Engineer rockets cannot reach. If you cannot hit consistent headshots, run a DMR or carbine in open-weapon playlists and still play the intel kit — the gadgets are the class.
Training paths and closed weapons
Each class has two training paths. One is free. The second unlocks through class assignments after you hit rank 20. Paths are flat bonuses: extra grenades, better repair, faster spotting, less movement penalty while shooting. They are not subclasses. Finish the assignments for your main before you buy cosmetics.
Closed-weapon playlists lock signature weapons:
- Assault — assault rifles
- Engineer — SMGs
- Support — LMGs
- Recon — sniper rifles
Carbines, DMRs, and shotguns stay available. That is why an M4A1 still shows up in every class discussion on the loadouts page.
How to choose for tonight’s queue
Look at the map and the holes in your squad. Two Assaults and no Support is a wipe waiting to happen. Four Recons on Wake Island is a screenshot, not a defense. If you are solo, Support or Engineer will raise your impact faster than another sniper. If you are in a four-stack, run one of each and swap only when the sector changes.
For a ranked take on which class is strongest this season, use the class tier list. For map-specific vehicle jobs, stay with the vehicle guide. New players should return to getting started if this page assumed too much.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Battlefield 6 questions.
What is the best class for beginners in Battlefield 6?
Support. You heal, restock, and revive without winning every gunfight. Assault is the next best if you only want to shoot. Details are in this guide and in getting started.
Can I use any gun on any class?
In open-weapon playlists, yes. In closed-weapon playlists, you are limited to the class signature plus carbines, DMRs, and shotguns. Gadgets never swap.
When should I play Engineer?
Whenever the map has tanks, IFVs, helicopters, or boats worth repairing. That is most large maps, including Tsuru Reef — see maps.
